The Keuka Lakehouse is built on a hillside which allowed us to have a wall built from local shale (full of fossils) to backfill with soil for NONNY’S Garden. This year, for the first time, deer have come down in the early spring to graze down the bed of Black-eyed Susans, daylilies, and Shasta daisies. Planted last year, the butterfly weed, spider daylilies, and a red coneflower have picked up the slack. Additional plantings in May added color while the original plants recover. Several phlox were added to the ones remaining. Three new daylilies added new colors and forms of blossoms. A few nasturtium plants with variegated leaves thrive along the rocky edge. For earlier next spring, two bleeding hearts (one white, one pink) were planted in the shady spots under the steps. Later to leaf out and flower are a couple liatris, dwarf butterfly bushes, dwarf Yarrow, heuchera, delphinium, and a Rosanne wild geranium. If we’re lucky, Nonny should have colorful flowers the entire summer.
